Can phyllonemus typus be kept with synodontis multi?

First off, I'd like to say Hello to everyone. I'm new here (but not to fishkeeping) and have been enjoying this site recently, so I decided to join in...

I was just informed that my LFS can order phyllonemus if I requested. I have a 38gal with a few small cichlids and 3 syno-multi's that are about 2". Will the phyllonemus fare well in such a tank if they are the same size as their tank mates?

Welcome to Planet Catfish.

I believe they can be kept with S. multipunctata, as long as you make sure the Phyllonemus typus get enough food.

I would worry more about the cichlids, if they are teritorial they may dislike the P.typus...what kind are they?

I have around 8 pseudotropheus saulosi and the said 3 syno-multi. The multis seem to hold their own quite well with these dwarf cichlids.

I wonder if 3 or 4 of the p.typus + the multis would be too much "cat" for one tank...

With the P.salosi just watch that they do not chase the barbels of the P.typus.

Also what is the footprint of your tank, is it only 12 inch front to back or 18 inches, the wider would be better for the typus as they can get quite competitive over territories to the point of killing each other off depending on how the tank is set up for cover.

Otherwise they would be just fine together(typus and syno's) that is the least of things to worry about.

Unfortunately, its the smaller footprint. There is a decent amount of rockwork in there, so I believe that aspect is well taken care of. Long term, I would like to keep the typus when its time for the syno-multi to go (when they eventually outgrow the tank), though I understand it may be some time before that happens.

Yes this is correct...keep in mind though in the Cat-eLog we use SL which is tip of the snout to base of caudal fin as opposed to TL which includes the tail fin, these will eventually thicken up as well.

I have a 38G (36" x 12") with 5 Lucipinnis and 4 peacocks. I can't imagine it being roomy enough for a group of multipunctatus AND a another territorial cat.

I have the multi's in my 75G and they are everywhere, 24/7.

Yeah, upon further consideration, I've come to the decision that I'll have to chose one or the other... Its a hard choice. I DO love my syno multi's....
