Amblyceps laticeps

Post by Silurus »

Snapped these pics today, from material sent by an Indian friend (also acquainted with Jools). Gravid female on top, male below. The cheek muscles of the male are a little more developed than in the female.

Apologies for the thumbnail, but the forum is not resizing the photo.

very interesting HH - i's the caudal typical - i'm trying to id a fish i got as a malnourished freebie that was an odd one in a group of (what i think are) mangois.

It sort of resembles protentum (wrong distribution?) but the caudal lobes look longer. I have seen it feed briefly so i'm hopeful it'll recover & then maybe get a photo.

Yup, that is the shape of the caudal fin of A. laticeps. This species is found together with A. mangois in some places.

my fish is something else then as the caudal lodes are quite elongated

Cheers for the clarification HH

Your fish might be Amblyceps tenuispinis (or what I identify as this species anyway).

Those are large eggs!

Are the differences in the adipose fin consistent for sexing them as well?

I don't recall the shape of the adipose fin as being different in preserved specimens. Which is not to say a difference does not exist. It may, but I don't recall ever observing any (I was also not looking very hard anyway).
