L340 spawned before holiday

Post by aldare »

Hi there,

I was very pleased to have first spawn of my hypans. But then I realized I am leaving next Friday for one week and the fry will be starving for that time. I guess it may cause either death or some serious damage for such small fish.

So, does anyone have any idea how to cope with it? I don't have anyone who could come regularly and feed them.
I can leave them on their own and wait for next spawn but they are my first success so I don't want to.

Thanks for any thoughts

It's a difficutlt scenario. If the tank the fry is in is an established tank, that would help a lot. Even squeezing a used filter pad or placing a small portion of filter pad in the tank will be a good thing.

And an automatic feeder may of course be helpful too - just make sure you are not overfeeding - this is undoubtedly worse.

I've checked all available feeders and there is none with so accurate dosing. L340 do have only about 5-10 fry and an automated feeding of such small amount of fish is almost impossible, I think.
Anyway, I will try to make the feeder on my own. Not sure how to do it, but I don't want to lose these nice small guys.
They are currently in a cave of tank with 4 discuses, so will have to be removed to some other tank.

Do you have a neighbour/friend that you trust to feed the fish? If so, you could package up some food for each feeding occasion...

when did the babies hatch?

normally they take ard 10-12 days before they take on solid food after they hatch..

you can put a small piece of driftwood in your breeder's trap for the fry to graze on plankton/biofilm for 1-2 days... that will leave you with 2 weeks' worth of holiday... :D

Tomorrow it will be one week they hatched. The yolk sacks are almost eaten, I guess they will start looking for food very soon.
Anyway, I've created very accurate home-made feeder and have set up the aquariums the way the water is circulating between 100L and 10L aquariums constantly so they will have no problems finding the food and the water should stay clear for whole week.
