HUGE : Panaque sp. (L418) aka Peru Green Royal Pleco

Post by amiidae »

This is the largest Panaque sp. (L418) that I have seen.

24-inch TL, weight : 5 Kg !!

Quite interesting that this 24-incher lost its marking while the other smaller 22-inch fish still maintain its stripes.

Well thats an impressive fish! Although im a fan of Panaque, this fella is quite an ugly one, the head look wrongs to me, still impressive though. The margin of colour on the caudal fin is a nice feature.

Matt,

From my observation, Royals do go thru quite a fair bit of changes when they hit certain size.

There is another 22-inch specimen that came in as well. Even though it is merely 2 inches diff in TL, but the width and hump is also reduced by almost 2 inches and the smaller fish still retains the stripes. It is like looking at a basketball vs a volleyball.

They almost like two diff species all together.

Wow, that is some massive fish. Really interesting to see how much they will change their color. I'm definitely never ever going to buy a striped Panaque.

I didn't even know they were commercially imported in that kind of sizes.
Cheers,
Tina

Not very pretty but that still doesn't stop it being a very impressive fish!
Q) Why are dead fish harder to 'wind up' than live fish?
A) Because dead fish never take the bait! ;)

Wow, beauty is in the eye, eh? I think it's spectacular in a dinosaur kind of way. It can live in my fantasy tank anyday
Racing, shoes and fish. Nothing else matters. Oh, and bacon.
