Batrochoglanis raninus-Bumblebee Jelly Catfish pic and ??

Post by Connie »

Picked two of these guys up some time ago they were labeled bambi cats at the lfs they are both 4-5 inches long.
I cant find much info on them besides on planetcatfish, anyone keep these?
Also here is a pic I have noticed over the past month or so they have both plumped up like this, (sorry for the picture quality) I thought it was because they were eating the tetras which were in the tank but they have no fish in the tank to eat now and it has been about a month or so??
They look like they are going to pop!
Does anyone know when they are sexually mature? if so maybe thry are full of eggs?
Also does anyone know good tankmates besides other catfish?
Here are two photos the first one is when I first got them and the second is a few days ago.
Thanks,
Connie

I have one. Since they grow to a considerable size eventually, you might want to keep them only with medium to large fish. So far, I have only kept mine with other catfishes, and it has gotten along well with them. As long as the tankmates are not small enough to be eaten, it should be OK with them.
Suitable non-catfish tankmates would be medium to large tetras.
The large bellies are just due to the fact that they are very greedy eaters and will gorge themselves if given the chance. If you have no other fish in there, I suggest you feed them less.

Well they are fed well as they take on whole wafers at a time.
I will cut down though it will be hard with that cute face staring at me begging for food:)

I can attest that they will prey on small fish such as neon tetra's and minnows. I just got one and its currently only about 2" so quite small and its already swallowed 2 feeder minnows I was storing in my 34gal tank that were almost as big as it was. Big mouths, patient stalkers, as soon as you turn the lights out, fish tend to start disappearing. I will probably have to consider moving my Neon's or setting up another tank before they start disappearing as well. Very cool fish though, to bad they weren't brackish or I'd put it in the 77gal with my Colombians.
5gal : 1 Dwarf Gourami

10gal : 2 Harlequin Rasbora's, 3 White Cloud Minnows, 1 Common Pleco, assorted plants

34gal : 6 Black Skirt Tetra's, 7 Neon Tetra's, 4 Red-tailed Green Cory's, 1 Bumblee Jelly Catfish, assorted plants

77gal : Brackish tank, 3 Colombian Sharks, 5 Knight Gobies, 2 Archerfish

I had moved my 2 into a 125 gallon with some larger cichlids, gold barbs, columbian tetras, bullseye catfish and mystus catfish and so far so good it has been about 6 months, they arnt as fat which means they arnt gorging themselves and I havnt had any fish missing and if I have it is because one of the cichlids picked it off.
Mine are a good 6 inches now and growing.
