LFS in Albany, NY area?

Post by Matien »

Hi,

I was sent to the US for my job, and I am currently in the Albany, NY area. As I am stuck for the week end, I was wondering if there were good fish place to see.

I have seen today :
Benson's Pet Center in Wolf Road, Colonie. Not a lot of fish in the tanks, but some beautiful Gourami.
Pet Supplies "Plus" in Western Avenue, Albany.
Petsmart in Washington Avenue Extension, Albany. Some beautiful Brochis Spendens here.

Is there some more attractives shops/importers to visit in this area? I may be able to go further if necessary.

See you soon,
Matien

Hi, don't know how much travel time you have but that Exotic Finds post near the top in this forum is located in Plainfield, New Jersey. Nice fish, good prices. Visiting in person is by appointment only info on index page. Exoticfinds.net
Racing, shoes and fish. Nothing else matters. Oh, and bacon.

Hi,

Thank for your answer. Plainfield is a bit to far (about 3,5 hour drive one way) to see just one shop which may be closed. It is true I had not precised how much I am willing to drive, so about 1,5H maximum drive (one way) around Albany is fine.

I have found a few other shops. I did visit 2 yesterday. Both of them are dedicated fish shops, and it was a big difference with the other I have seen in this area.

The first one was Eddies Aquarium Centre, RT9 in Lathan.
Regarding alive material, the good point was the choice : they have good variety, either in soft and salt water. The bad point is I found it was a lot of dead fishes in the tanks... and some tanks were under treatment with methylene blue. As well, a few tanks had algae you do not want at home.
Some discus and other amazonian fishes were waiting to be on sale on february 18th, but I do not know when they did arrive. It is just a surprise to me that they do a quarantine directly in the sale tanks.

The second one was Davey Jones Locker Retail, 386 Delaware Avenue, Albany 12209
I was really impressed by this shop : the tanks were clean and not over populated. The shop as well was really clean and tiedy. Really good first impression. When I looked in the tanks, no bad surprise : fishes looked healthy. The soft water part is more developped than the salt one (even if I found the choice in marine tank enough and really interesting : it was the first time I saw some of the fishes who are available here. I am not one expert in marine tanks anyway).
The guy in the shop took time to have a chat, and this was great.
I am reccomending this shop for the ones which are in the area. It is a kind of paradise for who loves fishes.
