10 gallon Corys

Post by aeroflight »

My mother is setting up a 10g tank and is looking for suggestions on bottom dwelling fish. Any chance she could keep some corys? I've never kept corys and know nothing practical about them so I thought I'd come here to find out first. She doesn't have any other fish in mind for the tank. We're starting from scratch. Any help would be great. Thanks.

If a 10g isn't suitable for corys, do you have any other recommendations?

Hi!
10 gallons is a good start, you sure could add a little group of one species that does not get too big, that will stay under 2inches.
You have for exemple Corydoras panda, it is a species that grow up to 2 inches, rather easy to breed, commonly available and has a nice color pattern.
You could have a look in the Cat-elog to have a look at all these beautiful species!

The thing will be what will/are the water parameters and what type other species will be kept with them, Characidae, Cichlidae ??

Here is a link to an article of Corydoras Master Ian Fuller:

I believe that she's looking at putting a few small (<2") tetras in the tank, too. Beyond that, it's all speculation. Even she doesn't know for sure. We wanted to find out what the best plan was before she jumped into it. Thanks for the help Yann!

Hi!

Id go with Corydoras habrosus. This is the most active cory i have and you could put a bigger group in the tank as with pandas. Or some Aspidoras maybe but ive never kept any.
cheers

I find Habrosus to be a good idea, but i would leave the Aspidoras for later, as they require really high oxygenlevels to thrive, and a really fast current that rules out most company fish.

I always recommend C. paleatus. First cory i ever had, and imo a good place to start, if you also want to gain some fairly easy breeding expirience. Only downside is, that their colours are by many not found tempting.

Good luck
