The pictures of the definite males in the Aqualog are very good. However Andreas fish and my fish for that matter are not as easy to sex because they are only 12-15cm. I guess we will have to wait a year or so for the fish to mature more before the difference between the males and the females becomes apparent.

Andreas,
Your 158mm is a female, put her together with your 145 mm male and you have a great couple for breeding attempts. Sometimes the genital papilla moves in and out and it's really difficult to take a picture at the right moment so that makes it hard for us to determine the sex, I think you have more females that are bigger then the 145 mm male...and he don't likes to big females
Like many other species males have difficulties to breed with females that are much bigger then him.
Haavard,
I think you have find a great couple too, give them a try in your very nice aquariums.
Two weeks ago I was visiting Berlin Aquarium and the youngsters of L128 look very nice, they are not impossible to breed...just to get a couple in the right size that work nice together.

I don't expect something this winter, Maybe next autumn/winter i have just 2 caves in the tank at this moment. And 2 caves is too few, so im going to make some new caves when i have collect som nice stones.
And i bought 6 new Hemiacistrus and that can (I think) disturb. But i don't know yet, maybe that's the key to breed them
I just have to try and faild.

Fantastic:) That is really good news for both of us:D Thank`s a lot Janne I will try to give them a stable, carefree and safe enviroment unntil they recover from transit. The big 19cm mama had a slight popeye on her right eye. It seems to be better now than on Sunday.
Janne, How would you describe the tank they were bred in at Berlin Aquarium?

I took some pictures but no one get sharp
The tank is quite big ~3000L, Discus and Cardinal tetras was the only other fishes in the tank. What supriced me was all the limestones they use to build up the very nice interior (in all aquariums), I dont think the limestone's make the water so hard because it solves very slow in water with a pH above 7 so I think the hardness maybe could be somewhere around 300 µS and the pH between 7 and 7,5. They produce a lot of water in their basement using big RO-units for both the freshwater and saltwater systems and each system has their own filter for the specific biotopes.
In their freshwater aquariums they change around 50% each week and less in their saltwater aquariums.
So, Norway I think have better water for softwater fishes
Popeye can be caused of a bacteria infection so check her every day, a little salt in the water is always good for new fishes to be acclimatized...special if they have been transported under a longer time.

Hi
Two months ago put into 100ltr tank 145mm female, 143mm male and 138mm male- who I thought to be dominant. I was seperating from other 5 in colony because of size discrepency.
143mm male now over 150mm, other male has been shunted to the side and a bit mauled. female fatter but no longer. I've been doing 15ltrs water change every two days for that two mths.
I have added cave as per I would when breeding GBA's. No real action but I tend to agree Jane- these guys are breedable in much smaller tanks than 4000ltrs with the right couple and conditions. Seperating the 3 dominants has definitely accelerated their growth. I 've had these guys for 2& 1/2yrs and only getting interesting now. Interestingly- bigggest grower of other 5 seems to be female.
I will post some pics tomrrow.
cheers!

Thank youfirenzenz wrote: Also to say- Harvaard those shots are amazing.
In these pictures I used 5 studio flashlamps with a cord from the camera to the master flash. The phototank and flashlamps were on the floor.firenzenz wrote:Your off camera flash- is that a speedlight on a cord or something a little more complex?

A few thoughts and observations of my 7 fish:
The first 6 I bought were slightly undernurished, and had bruises and shortened fins. They had probably suffered some in transit, and one og then died shortly after purchase. The five survivors put on weight quicly, and seems to be fast growing.
The second 2 fish I bought were a real bargain. A huge female, and slightly smaller male. The female was really fat, and the male was nice too. They had obviously not suffered for long in transit. The male had long bristles from the gill area, and pectoral fins. The female eats an enourmes amount of food, and is even thicker than on the pictures. She is a daytime fish, and never bothers to hide. The male is not a shy fish either, but likes to rest in the shadows most of the time. He has a healthy appetite as all my L128s. These are really easy and rewarding fish to keep.
The interesting thing about the male is that he has lost all the long spines from gill area and pectoral fins. What seperates him from the female is very much the behaviour and overall body shape.
Now I wait patiently for the bristles to come back. Maybee then I can make an attempt on breeding these fish. Meanwhile I just enjoy watching and feeding them.
Andreas 15 fish are thriving too in his 900 liter. We reagularly share thoughts and observations on these fish.

Both of these fish are males. Just thought it could be interesting to know Over the last few weeks they have grown a lot of spines from the gill area and the pectoral fin spine. I don`t have any opportunity to photograph at the moment, but I will do so later in the season.
This one turned out to be male too:
