What is this catfish?

Post by ChristinaR »

I know nothing about catfish, but I found this forum & it seems like a good place to look.

I bought a tank that came with a few fish--2 unknown catfish & 1 pleco.

The catfish are 8-9 inches, they don't hide during the day, and every 20 minutes or so they both quickly swim to the surface and make a large splash--my guess is that they take a gulp of air.

The photo was taken by the guy I got the tank from--I can take an additional photo if needed. I think the most interesting thing about their appearance is that the scales appear to be in straight diagonal lines across their bodies.

It's hoplosternum littorale. Callichthys callichthys' dorsal and adipose fins are farther apart

easiest to separate these 2 species is by tailfin

H littorale has a 'V'shaped tail, Callichthys a rounded one.

Nice fish, it is much more active then the more common relatives. Mine lived only 10 years, but iI got it when an adult, of uncertain age.
