Which Panaque sp. ?
Hello,
I have seen a beautifull royal at a Greek fish shop that i really want to buy and would like to id him first so that i know his origin before i buy him...
He is a royal pleco with red eye, normal stripping above and fully spotted belly...The markings at the dorsal fin are not the stripes you would see on a L190 but where the stripes would be there are small spots...What sp. is he and mainly, where does it come from?
Because there is quite a confussion on this subject,i would like anyone who know more on that to explaine a bit more...
Thank you very much in advance

Thank you all for your replys
We are talking about a fully grown fish that is well 25-30cm...So its not a juvie and his lines are not going to ''split'' into spots.
Arent L330s supposed to be fully spotted? Also my main concer is not the particular sp. but rather where he comes from...Is there any chance he may come from the Orinoco?
Jim,i am refering to the big specieman at Hydrocosmos that i have been watching and wanting some time now...He seems to be the same sp. with the Panaque strip+spot he regurarly imports...
Thank you in advance

Kostas,
The pattern is rather variable and changes with age. They are an Amazon population from northern Amazon tributaries in Colombia (Caqueta system).

I was trying to point out this.
"L 330 (DATZ 4/2003)
DATZ states that this form of P. nigrolineatus comes from the Rio Guejar, Colombia in the Orinoco basin. My contacts among the exporters of Colombia claim the fish comes from the Caqueta region, Amazon basin."
There is disagreement between what the German hobby books say and what Colombian exporters have told me.

Re: Which Panaque sp. ?
Hi,
I am bringing up this topic again as i recently took some photos of the Panaque i was telling you about...So here they are...
So,now that you have a few photos of the Panaque i was asking you about, what do you think he is?Is he an L330 or something else? For those of you who have collected Panaque in their natural habitats, where do you think this fish comes from? What s the most likely catching location for such a Panaque from your experience?
Thank you very very much in advance
