Power outage. Lost EVERYTHING

This is the first time I've been able to get online since the worst ice storm in over 50 years rolled through the area 5 days ago, knocking out the electricity. I used battery powered airstones, and floated bags of hot water to try to keep the temps up, but I lost the battle. Here are my losses

plus large quantitites of fry from these groups

10 tanks completely wiped out. Nothing left to do now but start scouring availability lists again.

Sorry to hear. Those are some nice fish you lost. I have some L333 babies I have been growing out if interested. That makes me want to go get a generator asap now!!!

Thanks guys, I'll get back to you if I need to once I get the tanks up and running again. Generators have been a scarce commodity around here. I had a friend go to Home Depot on the second day after the storm hit and he was #603 on the waiting list. On the plus side all of the pl*cos will be easily replaced, although it will be expensive. My LFS is working with me to locate them from his suppliers and is going to give me a break on them. The cichlids are another story and are actually more upsetting to lose then the pl*cos. I can get fry for most of the species, but it's going to take upwards of a year of growing out before they get back to a good breeding size.

Steve, Sorry to hear about your losses. Must hurt quite baddly, I should think.

We had power cut as well, but all my fish seems to have coped nicely, but the power was only off for a few hours, not days.

I would seriously consider a petrol/diesel generator if there's a likelyhood of this happening again...

That is terrible. I am really sorry to hear about that. I read that the USA was having terrible weather at the moment, in areas that normally don't get such cold winters.

Hope you are able to replace them all. Bet it will take ages though! How long did you collect them all for??

Steve, my condolences on your loss...I suffered something similar during Hurricane Wilma...three days without power & got wiped out. I would suggest preprare yourself for such a situation, like I do now. I'm prepared for 1-2 weeks without electricity. I got a Power Generator, good for 12 hours, a Mega Power Inverter, dual Deep Cycle Marine batteries, plus chargers for the 12V batteries. So, the system works as this: Power out, switch to generator, stop feeding, charge batteries. Stop generator, hook marine batteries to Power Inverter, stop filtration, all air pumps on. The cycle repeats itself. If you notice, the tanks will have heaters for at least 12 hours. I'm also experimenting with gas heaters, as well as those metal heaters to heat coffe cups, the type that you sink in the water...maybe I can run them with the power inverter on a mechanical timer. Best of luck...and be prepared. Dan

Dang. Maybe your next purchase should be a generator. We have wood stoves for heat, so we don't rely on electricity at all for heat. When you've lived in Montana for 50 years or so, you learn to be self-reliant.

Day number nine and we're still without power. They say it could be another week yet before everyone is restored. I plan on getting a generator in about a month when all of the ones that were just purchased start hitting the used market

can u not get any off of ebay? (generators) as yes it may be expensive, but it might be a good place to look?

This may be a dumb question, but how are you able to email without any power? I'm not real computer savy, so I was just curious.

I am staying at my sisters. Still no power at my house. And the LFS lost his power too for 3 days.
