Hi,
Although slightly more expensive but far better in my opinion is BD Aquarium Sand which is available at most good retailers. The owner of the company is a very good friend of mine and I have been using and plugging the product in aquatic magazines for a few years now. It is the closest product ...

Hi
I have kept numerous specimens and species over the years, and made some observations, I have seen some activity which may have been linked to spawning but unfortunately no eggs or offspring. I seem to recall that these catfish were being hormone induced in the Czech Republic 10+ years ago. I ...

Large Aquariums
In addition to the other companies mentioned I would thouroughly recommend my good friend Giles Barlow, who has built all of my fish house tanks to my sizes and criteria. Giles can be contacted at his shop on 01254 388815 (tell him that Chris mentioned his name to you)
Best of luck

My Orinoco's are currently housed in two tanks 72" x 18" x 18" and 60" x 18" x 18", but will eventually be re-housed within my 12' x 48" x 30" tropical pond. The Orinoco's which are housed in the 72" tank are living with my Platydoras costatus and Agamyxis pectinifrons that I purchased whilst in ...

When keeping Raphaels in small groups they do eventually keep snail populations under control, even in my own experience to the point where the original snail population is eliminated. If you are only able to keep single specimens then the snails will continue to breed faster than your poor dorad ...

Indoor Ponds
Hi,
I currently have two tropical ponds within my fish house. The main pond which up until a couple of weeks ago housed my large collection of Pseudodoras niger's, Pterodoras granulosus, Megalodoras urunoscopus, Leiarius pictus to name but a few, is 12' x'48" x 30". It has been constructed out of 9 ...

South American tank
Yes the striped raphael (Platydoras costatus) does grow bigger than the spotted raphael (Agamyxis pectinifrons). The striped grows to 170mm s.l. whilst the spotted grows to 140mm s.l.
s.l. = standard length i.e. from the tip of the snout to the base of the caudal peduncle
Good luck

Typical set-up for Raphaels
Basics required are as follows:
Minimum aquarium size 24" for 3-4 specimens depending upon available space taken up by other species.
These catfish really do prefer to shoal so ideally you should purchase at least four fish but preferably six.

Perrunichthys perruno/Leiarius pictus
I have personally kept both of these fish over many years. They will rapidly outgrow a 72" aquarium. I purchased a 5" perruno about 12 months ago which is already 18" in length! I rescued a pictus 3 years ago when it was 18" in length, this fish now lives in my large tropical pond (1000 gallons) and ...
