Re: Just a hobby or a field of study?
Hobby. I did an aquarist internship as an undergrad, and it was just too much routine husbandry for me. I do work in the wildlife/fisheries field professionally, but after a handful of years in the scientific track, the low pay (etc) got old and I switched to the admin track as a career.

Re: Corydoras nanus color variant or a different species?
Ok, thank you. I guess it doesn't matter. I wonder what my "nanus" could be then. Was thinking about getting more.

Corydoras nanus color variant or a different species?
I bought a small group of Corydoras nanus recently. One fish appears different. I'm sorry for the poor photos, but it is the best I could do with my cell phone. What I'm asking is if the specimen with the pale stripe across the dorsal ridge is a different sp. of Cory, or a aberrant color variation ...

Re: Where to buy
Ok, I'm in Mass as well. Uncle Neds is a great store that gets some unusual cories... if you've already gone that route, have you tried the Boston Aquarium Society? It has auctions regularly and you can pick some stuff up for a good price.

For a young oscar, sure, but a full size adult? Maybe one and nothing else in the tank, IMO. Not a great situation at best.

Sorry, that is way too small a tank for a fish that size. Doubt very much it is happy with the situation.

Mine some of them are already max size between 33cm-35cm, I keep them in my dirty small pond and I think PH above 8,0, because so dirty so I keep them there to ...

Re: Loricariids of the Middle Xingu River
I received this book last week. Well packed and shipped, seems a good quality printing. I can't say that I found it to have a ton of info, but I suppose with it being in two languages there is only half the room, but still, there was space for more info that could have been utilized. Glad to have it ...

Re: Is this a clown pleco?
There is nothing wrong with opinions, but if you're going to disagree with an ID that multiple people have given (and there has been no disagreement), it may be helpful if you say why you think your opinion is correct compared to the given ID (number of rays in the dorsal fin, shape of the head, etc.)

I am no expert like the people here, but a one foot fish in a 60 gallon is less than ideal. Quite a bit less.

I have not. Nor did I receive a confirmation. But it has only been 2-3 weeks and during the holidays, so not worries. I ship stuff to Europe that takes 10 days often.

Re: ID my new catfish
Given time and size, the new catfish will kill and/or eat all of those, with the other catfish perhaps being last.
Sooner than probably later.
I would return the new fish.

Re: Cory behavior -- will they stop pacing?
Doesn't sound like anything to worry about. I've had Corys and other fish do similar things when just added. They chill out after time.
Just a minor thought though, if you have a light/bright window shining on that side of the tank it might create a mirror type reflection in the tank.

Re: Don't sell your catch on Craigslist :)
Are there any states that allow fisherman (with non-commercial licenses) to sell their catch? You can give it away, but I've not heard anyplace that allows sale. Commercial licenses (including for baitfish) are a completely different class, more expensive, and more heavily regulated.

I don't know about plecos, but I have a Corydora sodalis that is blown up like a rubber ball (one of those small balls you'd get out of a $0.25 vending machine) and eats, swims, etc. and has been like that for about four months now. Not sure what the condition is, but it is chugging right along. I ...

No idea where you could get one, but can you really get a large tank set up and cycled that fast? (And no, I really don't know the answer to that question, I'm curious... it seems fast).
