I have some L333's and it isn't one of those, it is more elongated (when compared to a female L333), has a forked tail and has a white base colour rather than yellow.

You have sharp eyes Janne, they are L333's in the background!

Yeah, the caudal fin is forked as in the second pic, but it seems smaller relatively when compared to the general size of the fish.

Given the myriad of L66 like species, and the fact that the 2 specimens in my opinion look disimilar, I wondered if anyone else agreed or disagreed!

Any other opinions?

Hi, I noticed the same thing in the new Back to Nature Guide to L-catfishes by Ingo Seidel. He states that H. contradens and L201 are different species, with H. contradens attaining a larger size, having larger lighter spotting, longer head and a broader higher body form.

L260 was another possibility, he has a very similar pattern to the first pic in the catalogue, though my plec's colouration is a lot darker (more brown than whitey gold). I have seen some large L260's at a local shop and he is no way as chunky as them, though they might not be L260....

Can anyone shed some light on the ID of this Hypancistrus? He's around 8-9 cm long and already has very bristly flanks. He also has a mottled/marbled underside. When he was purchased he had lighter wider markings similar to the rio_curua sp. in the cat-elog.

I forgot to point out that 2 different fish are in the pictures, and they are about 2.5" in length. The 2nd and 3rd pics are of the same fish. Which pic did you think was an L333, or did you think they both are?

I have 2 very similar plecs to yours, which I purchased mail order as L333 (from a guy called Enzo - they were sent through the post in jiffy bags!!! Unsurprisingly it being February 2 didn't survive the trip). However having seen some genuine L333 since I'm pretty certain mine ...
