Re: Two fish died and has red marks on body

Have you tested the water? Ammonia and nitrite in the water can cause these type of sores. How long did it take from the sores first appearing to the fish dying and were there any other symptoms such as lethargy heavy breathing ect?

Re: Trying to identify illness on Corys, white fungus-like?

It depends on the severity, Lympho is extremely variable in appearance. The nodules always start out small and then sometimes grow, there can be just a single small or large nodule or there can be lots of small or large nodules which have a very irregular shape. I did think the Schwartzi was ...

Re: Trying to identify illness on Corys, white fungus-like?

To me this looks like a classic case of Lymphocystis. If this is the disease then there are no treatments for it because it is a viral disease. The virus invades the cells and causes them to form the irregular white nodules which will eventually fall away and leave a small wound which in healthy ...

Hexamita does mainly affect but not exclusively Cichlids. The other (possible) symptoms are

1, White stringy faeces.

2, Enlargment of the sensory pores, on the head and lateral line. The pores then appear to become infected and discharge.

3, Dark colouration.

4, Loss of appetite.

5, Either ...

The time the cycling process takes has loads of variables which make it impossible to predict accurately. But it will be speeded up by

1, Keeping the tank warmer than normal - mid to high eighties, if no fish are present.

2, Keeping the pH at 7 or above because the filtration bacteria don't do ...

That's right shrimps from the store or a piece of lean meat anything like that.
They will cause the ammonia to rise and help get the cycle started.
But don't over do it. 2 or 3 pieces the size of a thumbnale will be enough.

Hi biomechmonster,

Using any fish to cycle a tank carries a risk to that fish's life/health.
Why not try a fishless cycle by adding a couple of (dead) Prawns to the tank, turning up the temp to around the mid-eighties (this speeds things up)and leave everything running.
If you have other tanks ...

Hi Bronze fry,

Like fish, plants have different requirements for temp, pH, GH ect. Some are very tolerant like the ones that you have listed and so will do well in aquaria more often than the more demanding ones.

I make small regular water changes to make sure that the important trace elements are ...

Hi racoll,

All my equipment is made by Denerle.
The substrate is a mixture of duponit (which is like a lime free potting compost) mixed with an equal volume of silica sand for a depth of 1 to 2 inches. On top of that there is a 3 inch layer of quartz gravel 1 to 2 mm which is like a very coarse ...

Hi Paul,

I have a large planted tank and I only very gently siphon the top of the gravel.
You should never stir up the gravel because plants hate fresh highly oxygenated water around their roots because it oxidises the nutrients and the plant starves. It will also allow nutrients out into the water ...
