What's old for L014 ? Just lost my 14 year old, can't find any water issues and everything else in the tank seems fine, wondering if like us all she just got old ?

Nothing like 50cm, maybe 25cm, my dull eyed royals have never gotten as big as my standard royals, same basic body shape but about half the size at same age.

Yes I have a Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps thats at least 18 possibly 20 years old (don't remember when I got it and old photos don't have dates, real photos not digitals LOL)

L191 Max Age. ?

Hi all. Have lost 2 of my full grown L191 Panaques (Dull eyed Royal) in last few months with no obvious cause or reason behind it. I'm not exactly sure of their age but between 9 and 11 years, so I'm wondering if it was just old age. Has anyone any experience of what a reasonable captive life span ...

Sometimes removing the spawning cave will stop them spawning, or at least slow them down till they find an alternative spot.

At the very least you should / could add Facebook and G+1 like buttons to each forum thread so we can 'like' posts we err like, will maybe pull in a few members for the forums.

Be sparing with commercial salmon food its packed full of fish protein. But they do love the pellets, at least mine do, guaranteed to bring every plec out for a look even in middle of day.

Mine get.
Courgettes, Prawns, Pumpkin, Broccoli, Boiled peas
JBL Pleco Tablets, Wardley Shrimp Pellts.
and of course plenty of wood in the tank.

I know its an issue in trout hatcheries, especially with rainbow trout. Hadn't heard of it happening with tropical fish but I know manager of local trout hatchery Ill see what he can tell me.

Pterygoplichthys pardalis (L021 L023) or Common Pleco, who has an old one ? Trying to work out the age of mine and he/she is at least 15 possibly 17 years old, my gold spot Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps L083, L164, L196 is 12 years old. Anyone got any data on age of these guys ?

I use lengths of bamboo bought from local garden store, just cut it above each knot and you have a perfect cave. Takes a while to get waterlogged and sink but once it does bn move right in.

mine are definately happier in a highly oxygenated swift current type setting. they seem to do ok on courgette and my general shrimp / spirulina / peas / agar mix
