Re: Multi-Syno Tank
Tank and fish sizes would be helpful in assessing both why it is working and whether it will continue to work. Personally I have only kept one synodontis species per tank, but I have previously kept some of your other species together, e.g. clown plecos, spotted raphaels, striped raphaels, and banjo ...

Re: ID please on syno (hybrid?) from Meijer sold as lace cat
Thanks for the info. Yes, I try not to buy fish from there, but I figured I would give it a shot given the price and keep these synos for a while. If they are actually S. eupterus, then I'll have to rehome them later, but that will take a few months at least.

ID please on syno (hybrid?) from Meijer sold as lace catfish
Here's my best current pic: http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q630/linuxrulesusa/tank%20pics%202013/2013-04-21225922_zps6f317e8a.jpg I picked him up with a couple others for $5 each at a Meijer (grocery store chain here in Michigan) last night. They were sold as lace catfish. They are in QT as ...

Re: Doradid Groups
My group of 6 (formerly cories (trilineatus) shoal fairly well, but perhaps not as well as a much larger group.
In my limited observation it seems the spotted raphael (agamyxis pectifrons) prefers to be huddled together/swim together more than the striped raphael, which you picked up.

Re: SA Bumblebee Catfish health issues
Hi all, And I realize I need to do water changes more often as those are the only way to long term solve high nitrates. They aren't, plants offer multiple advantages over just a filter and water changes. Actively growing plants remove ammonia (NH3) and nitrite(NO2) before they ever enter ...

Re: SA Bumblebee Catfish health issues
Sorry to hear about your fish losses. Have you diagnosed the problem? I am sure that you know that just because some of your fish seem fine now, they may already be infected. Yes, the treatment for ich and columnaris are different, which is why I said try the ParaGuard if applicable. I hope things ...

Re: SA Bumblebee Catfish health issues
Thanks for the suggestions. I had one die on its own and then two more I culled as they were pretty far gone ad I was more concerned about losing other fish. The other five seem to be in better shape. Two have virtually no syptoms. One has a bit of a barbel problem which should clear up with water ...

Thanks, I'll use that as a starting point for testing and determining how frequently I should do water changes for the microglanis.Bas Pels wrote:3 and 4 are arbitrarily

Re: SA Bumblebee Catfish health issues
Generally speaking, I find Microglanis very easy to keep - not demanding at all but then, I keep them with cichlids with are quite fuzzy regarding the cleanness of their water. You will agree, if I keep the water pollution under 3, all fish wich accept 4 are 'eazy'. Which cichlids do you keep them ...

Re: SA Bumblebee Catfish health issues
Right, I realize that a bigger filter will only help in the sense of if there is waste sitting on the substrate, getting some of that up so that it is not polluting the water. And I realize I need to do water changes more often as those are the only way to long term solve high nitrates. What I want ...

SA Bumblebee Catfish health issues
I'm not 100% certain what is going on with my SA bumblebee cats. Would appreciate any advice on what's happening and how best to treat. Re: Getting some new cats
Is the main external difference between mysticetus and tengara the size/shape of the dark spot on the side? I agree his look like mysticetus. Obviously those grow larger as well (but only to 130mm vs 80mm or so).Silurus wrote:I believe the last are .

Re: Sun catfish?
When we talk about fitting in the mouth, we most usually mean girth-wise, not length-wise. Long skinny fish can be killed and digested stepwise but sometimes just killed and then spit out. Again, sun cats can be risk if any fish fits quite well in its mouth girth-wise. If it does not happen right ...

Re: Getting some new cats
I have not had problems per se but based on size/body shape of the banjo cats vs the sun cats [and especially the gulpers],* I think you will have problems down the road. How soon, I can't say. I do own sun cats and banjos but I keep them separately. Also the mottled banjo is supposedly a somewhat ...

Re: Sun catfish?
Thanks for the additional info. That sounds consistent with other things I've read, both in terms of growth rate and max size for the sun catfish. Very helpful. Guess we'll just see how it goes. The other loaches should max out at a large enough size to avoid being eaten at least for a while...I don ...

Thanks. Yes, that's the one I meant...should have put the Latin name.
I see max size on these is 18"...how long can they reasonably live in a 55? E.g. what is a typical growth rate, realizing it varies?
I picked up two with a batch of other Asian catfish for a few dollars.

Re: Confirm which species of bumblebee?
Thanks. Based on the above links as well as this one: http://www.scotcat.com/factsheets/microglanis_iheringi.htm, it seems this is the dwarf SA bumblebee, so I'm probably looking at max length ~3-3.5" (some sources say closer to 2"), and lifespan maybe 2-3 years from now as it is probbly 1.5-2 ...
