Here's my best current pic:

I picked him up with a couple others for $5 each at a Meijer (grocery store chain here in Michigan) last night. They were sold as lace catfish.
They are in QT as several fish showed possibly signs of ick and/or lack of care, though the tanks were better kept yesterday than the last time I wandered by a month or two back.
Pretty clearly a Synodontis species in my assessment.
My best guesses at the moment are...
Syno sp. hybrid (3): http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/spe ... es_id=1121
Syno aterrima: http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/spe ... ies_id=258
I assume the hybrid variant 3 is much more likely in this case.
Also I assume that juvenile S. eupterus is not likely because of the squiggle pattern vs. actual spots? They also had some with spots in the tank which could have been another hybrid species, or else juvenile S. eupterus.
Thanks for any input or other suggestions as to ID.
ID please on syno (hybrid?) from Meijer sold as lace catfish

It looks more like young than a hybrid. You have to bear in mind that very young don't actually have spots.
And yes, fish from Meijer. Brings back the (not-so-pleasant) memories of tankfuls of diseased fish.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I try not to buy fish from there, but I figured I would give it a shot given the price and keep these synos for a while. If they are actually S. eupterus, then I'll have to rehome them later, but that will take a few months at least.
