A Zaire biotope would be awesome.
I've always liked the idea of a biotope. I have actually seen the "Buffei" african glass cats for sale a few years back. they couldn't sell them because they were priced at $20 each and as you say, they need to be in a decent sized group.
I already have a breeding ...

Re: Reintroduction & 20 gallon in need of Catfish!
Thanks Viktor! The tank cracked and I had to rehome the E-cat unfortunately. Luckily the leak was small but it was in the lower 3rd of the aquarium so pretty much made it unusable.

Wow I can't believe I am just catching up with this now, it was one hell of a read and it is very inspiring to see someone take their dream and make it happen.

Reintroduction & 20 gallon in need of Catfish!
Hello all, I've been a member here since 2011 but for whatever reason have focused more on cichlids for quite some time now.
I would love to get in to keeping catfish again and there really isn't any other place online with the same wealth of knowledge that this place has.

Re: Pleco ID
Yeah the Aquarium he came from had an algae bloom and was not doing so well. The owner, decided to take the tank down and I got some free fish. A really large female bristlenose (no bristles on nose) and this guy.
No idea what he had been eating but hes a fat little guy.

Re: Pleco ID
Awesome, thank you so much for the ID and sex.
I was thinking of picking up some more of these guys.
hes currently in a 20g with a few plants and moss with 6 neon tetras and 4 wag platys, he has plenty of wood to munch on.

Thanks Jac, quite a few pictures look nothing like mine but some of them look exactly like him.
I guess there must be a wide variation within the species.
I would assume with the gut that I have a female?

Pleco ID
Hello, this pleco is 2 years old. very round and healthy.
It was given to me for free along with a bristlenose pleco.
The owner thought it was also a bristlenose but I suspect otherwise.
I would like to know the ID so I can put it in the correct aquarium surroundings.

Re: Pleco that can live with Gymnogeophagus sp.
Sorry if my information isn`t quite accurate I got it from an article on Gymnogeophagus species.
as of right now I have an empty cycled tank and I was wondering which of the more commonly available pleco species or other catfish are compatible in terms of temperature.
I havent selected species yet ...

Pleco that can live with Gymnogeophagus sp.
Hello all, I am thinking of starting a temperate aquarium for gymnogeophagus and other subtropical species.
I read that the Gymnos do best between 46 and 86 degrees, but ideally should be between 60 degrees to 77 degrees.
I see mentions of plecos that do well with gymnos but no specific names. I ...

Re: Electric catfish tankmates ?
I kept my little 1.5" one several years ago with a small convict cichlid. He shocked the convict and the fish was disabled.
The convict could only swim on its side like a flounder, however he lived just fine and fed ordnarily with other cichlids.
In hindsight I should have tried keeping him with ...

Re: Syno Angelicus... have we made a terrible mistake?
as someone who has had baby mbuna many times I can say that those guys will always find a way to survive, they are masters of hiding and are a lot quicker than the syno would give them credit for. I find it unlikely that he would eat a lot of them But I`ve never kept angelicus.

Re: Synodontis ID
Thanks for the ID guys I appreciate it! Do nigrita like to be kept in groups Ideally? I could keep my eyes open for some more but the only Syns I generally see are Eupterus, Upside down cats, expensive rift lake cats and Hybrids. Now I have a example of what to look for I could seek to find more ...

thats a brilliant Idea, I think I will update this thread every now and then with pictures of my little cat as he grows.
would still be great if Birger could help me a little bit in the right direction. If he asks any specific questions I'm more than happy to help him with them

Birger thank you so much for looking for me, I owe you! I want to provide the best care for my little catfish so I would like to have an idea of his species, even if we could just nail it down to 2 or 3.

thanks Mark, its just over 2" right now but growing about 1.5"-2" a month.
from what you have already is there any educated guess you could make? I understand fully that the ID won't be definate until its larger but would be nice to have a opinion on it.
Thanks
Reteos

Thanks, It looks a little like the one that begins with an O, and the poll thing on the species shows that there are owners of that species on the forum. there is owners for just about every species. Thing is mine has very clear black and white markings, and a lighter hue.
all the pictures I can find of M. Electricus have very dusky dull markings that dont stand out at all like mine, even the young ones.

Which species of Electric Catfish is this?
Hi all I just registered here, I brought this Electric catfish when it was smaller than 1", hes grown quite rapidly on bloodworm and is a great little character. He is called Tolkki and lives on his own in a 20gal long for the time being.
I'm just curious as to what species he is because I can't ...
