the pricing of sand is scandalous.. tip for people in the uk when buying sand, i use childrens playpit sand it is non-toxic and does not affect the p.h. of the water,, and;; it is usually a third of the cost of buying sand from a pet store or garden centre. :) I dont like the color that the playpit ...

Why do you not want to use Peat, its proberly as good a thing as you could use. Eheim do a Peat substance that you can fit in a filter.

I'd check your test kit is working properly as i can't see how you can have a zero nitrate reading as it is the end product of the nitrification process and can only be removed by water changes. Check your test kit for a use by date.

It certainly looks like a Elegans, you can just see the marks on the dorsal fins starting. Is it a juvinle?
