No, lighting is not necessary, not for the fish anyway, only for us to check on them and to see into the tank.. As it is a well lit room also.
you could try getting a cheap LED strip light from ebay from under a tenner if you did want it lit... cheaper to run and better than the T5 or T8's in your ...

Only 5 & 9 are females others are males or young males. in the other pic, too young to sex.

Hi Andrew. the only female in the group you have there is in the first pic and second to last pic as you say, in the first pic it is the one on the right with the broken line on its right hand side and again in the second to last pic its the one on the right below the fish at the top of the pic ...
