Re: Telling the difference between L144 and A. cf. Cirrhosus
Several months ago I specifically asked if the L144 was a color or species. If anybody is interested in what the experts here had to say, the thread was titled "L144, color or species.

Re: Bristlenoses, but which ones?
I can see the two toned look on the alpha male, but it is still just a normal variation within brown. While it can be similar in pattern, especially as an adult, calico has a much more distinctly black over reddish coloring.

Re: Telling the difference between L144 and A. cf. Cirrhosus
I don't think the yellow color of the L144 necessarily disqualifies leucism as the factor at work here. Granted leucism reduces all pigments including yellow, but as apistomaster brought out color can arise from dietary pigments also. Partial leucism is also a possibility as L144 do on occasion ...

Re: Telling the difference between L144 and A. cf. Cirrhosus
I have done some research into the L144. The commonly available L144, which is a yellow/orange fish with pigmented eyes is a color morph of the common aquarium strain BN A. cf cirrhosus. The reason it has an L# is that at one point there was a separate species of Ancistrus of that color that ...

Re: how common are mutants
I'm not too certain if the defects were genetic or simply due to factors in the fry development during growth.
This is a very good point. Anybody want to weigh in on how to determine if a defect is genetic or developmental? I would imagine the same defect in different batches of fry from the same ...

how common are mutants
I just noticed one little BN fry that has a reduced dorsal fin. The fin starts out normally enough but only extends to 4, perhaps 5 at the max soft rays. This is the first mutant so far out of several hundred produced by it's parents.
My question is how common are mutants within the common BN? Do ...

Re: Ancistrus sp Lemon Drop
I have heard the term "Lemon drop" used to describe albino or L144 X calico, or even albino X L144. These color crosses are browns (barring recessives cropping up) and are within the range of variation for normal brown, though the spots are supposed to be more lemon colored than average ...

Re: how much variation in BN?
I am trying to get some decent photos, tried to this morning but the little buggers swam away when they saw me.
I'm not saying that they are temminkii, just that they look more like those photos than the photos listed under cirrhosus. Part of the problem is that I don't know how wide the normal ...

how much variation in BN?
About a year ago I bought 3 little brown BN at a LFS. They were just sold as BN, nothing special. I really enjoy them. They are the reason I joined this forum and decided to learn about them in depth.
From very early on I realized they didn't really look consistent with one another. Not knowing ...

Re: What is that?
Hi Everyone,
I looked at a photo of A stigmaticus and it does have thick different looking tentacles, but nothing like the fish I was talking about.
On the positive side, I discovered where I'd seen the photo of the BN longfin with the odd tentacles. It is posted on Plecofanatics in their pleco ID ...

Re: L144, color or species
Hi
Just found an old post where it stated the real L144 was more of a yellowish/greyish and the color morph of the common is yellow orange. I certainly don't have enough knowledge to know if that's true or not, but it does fit with mine in the US, which should be a morph of the common, is definitely ...

Yes, that's the drawing, thank you for putting it up!
I did know it's an ancistrus, but which one, what "L" number or species, is what I was wondering if anyone knew.

Hi
Does anybody know what type of ancistrus is on the homepage of "All Catfish Species Inventory"? Its the drawing on the top right hand corner just above "participant log in" It has bristles that fan out at the ends, not typical forks, but a fanned out brush on stalks.

L144, color or species
I have been looking to find a definitive answer to this question and I saw this question actually posed on the forum about 4 years ago, but it never got a reply. This may seem an elementary question, but the answer is important in order not to hybridize or add to whatever hybridizations are already ...

Re: What did i just buy?
Hi all,
For what it's worth, I happened to see a tank of pangasius catfish at a local chain pet store here in Idaho, USA. The tank was marked pangasius sutchii and that they only grew to 12 inches. Sounds like it's probably the same fish.
Regards
Amberdawn

Common BN color changes
Hello,
No picture yet because I'm pretty sure that what I have is a common aquarium trade BN.
My question is, is it normal for the common BN to change it's coloration to match (sort of) what it's resting on?
I bought one for algae clean up in my 55 gal tank. I liked it so much that I got 2 more a ...
