I generally figure about 5 in the aeneus size/species for a 10 gallon, though I've had more when breeding. Keep in mind that bronze, green and albino cories are often the same c. aeneus species anyway, depending on who is selling them. (Saw them labeled as "blue coricats" a few weeks back...)

Re: Breeding Cories for the first time
In almost every community tank I've had with basic cories, I've ended up with fry that lived to adulthood. Granted, never in the hundreds of fish category like when I purposely raised them.

Both sterbai and most tetras are farm-raised in Florida using ground water. As probably were your angels. They all do fine in a mixed tank at 80-82F, even using tap water.

My plecos have freaked out in bags with no air, even though they don't need it. I stopped using Kordon bags for them because of this. Not sure if that's a unique experience to me or others as well.apistomaster wrote:Tie off the bags with a rubber band or two and leave no bubbles of air in the bag.

My pandas laid eggs reliably in a breeding mop and it was easy to transfer to a hatching tank. I've had pandas in a wide range of water conditions and they always did fine, but they bred best in mid-70F water with a neutral pH and lower hardness (live black worms and a cool water change always ...

CaribSea is a great product. That said, I'm cheap and use play sand. I only go about 1/2" deep so a $3, 30# bag lasts about 14 years...

Well, I got a deal on nine peppered cories, they're in quarantine for a few weeks and then we'll see how they do in a colony. for the river sand does it matter what color?
I use white pool filter sand, but it probably doesn't matter, the fish won't care. White sand usually looks "dirty" quickly so you might want to use a more natural color. I also have a tank on my desk at work with albino aneus on a black sand, very ...

When I first started breeding cories years ago, the adults didn't bother the eggs but ate all the fry as soon as they hatched. That's when I learned to pull the eggs or adults. The largest problem with BN's is getting rid of the fry. My LFS don't want them until they're close to two inches, which means I need a vegetable farm to support the grow out period.

Big fish eat little fish. If you want most of the little fish to survive, you need to separate them from the big fish. In a tank or in nature, the rules are the same.

And as was pointed out in another post, consider the relative size of the fish (compared to adults) - you may find that the ones that are "best" to breed are the ones that are closes to mature size!
Echo that, especially since most of the species you list take quite a while to reach breeding size ...

Long fin traits and albino traits do indeed happen in nature, but they are, as you say, subject to higher predation, and thus less likely to reproduce.
But they are still natural variations, and still not hybrids.
Has anyone actually seen or created a cory hybrid? I'm not sure it has happened ...

I used to breed cories in a 10 gallon or 20 long, and with Panda cories I used spawning mops. They liked to lay in the mops and the next morning I would pull the mops to a 2.5 gallon tank to hatch. When the fry leave the cave (or dad kicks them out) they're ready to eat the same thing dad was eating. There's no hurry to pull dad, he won't bother the fry.

Re: Which plecs would be best in my Discus tank?
Personally, I'd mix L-134 and a variety of bristlenose, it's a decent combination as a cleaning crew and neither grow large enough to be a major issue with discus. I love L-134's, but they do nothing for the algae, and that's where the BN's come in.

The fry are being moved to the frysaver as eggs..and these white grains are becoming visible within days.
