Okay guys
Currently I have 2 tanks - A 100 gallon with a Gar in it and a 30 gallon with 4 cory cats and two guppies. I had a bunch of neons however a few days ago something happened and all my neons died - the water is real murkey now as well. I will be changing the water tonight in hopes of fixing the problem without hurting the corys.
My question is - for the 100 gallon I had planned on getting rid of the gar and putting 20-30 african chichlids in it. I was thinking last night though - how many corys could I put in there and would that look cool or not? What could I put with the corys for color? Also - would the gar eat the corys - he is still relativley small and the only thing I feed him is shrimp and the occasional feeder guppy which is smaller than a cory?
What do you guys think - what would you do in my position???

It should be okay, but compatibility does have a lot to do with it. For instance, how large is the gar, and what species is it? Also, are you planning to raise the pH and hardness to accomodate those Africans? If it is the latter, than that tank won't really be suitable for cories. If the gar is large or aggressive, same thing.

As for the amount of cories you could keep, it depends on what species of cichlids you are looking for, and what kind of cories. Dozens of Corydoras would fit in that tank, provided there was enough space. It is up to you. The cichlids will probably provide a good bit of color, but again, it is your choice. Do you have any preferences?

My thought was put the Corys I have now in with the Gar and watch them closely. If the Gar shows no aggression to them then add as many as the tank will hold.
the Gar sits on botton alot however he does swim quite a bit too so he does add some life to the tank. I would have to be careful about mixing any other large fish with him as I have read that aggresive fish can easily break a Gars snout. The Gar is still quite small and can only eat small feeder guppies and he has to work to get them down so I am hoping he will not bother with the corys as long as I keep him fed. I am not sure what type he is and no one has ever been able to tell me - I can post a pic if anyone is intrested.
I think a 100 gallon with the Gar, as many corys as possible, a few mystery snails, java fern and some java moss would be a beautiful tank.
I have two Fluval 404s running on the tank, two heaters for redundancy, and a bubble wand.

Hi all
I added the Cory Cats last night and so far so good. One of them was even riding on the back of the Gar one time and so far I have not seen him go after them at all. I am keeping my fingers crossed
As for the guppies I am gonna pick up a small 2-5 gallon and put them in that then who know what I will do with the 30 once I get it cleaned up
