I have a Juwel Rekord 120 and a 60cm tank, they are situated next to each other, however, my Rekord tank always has a film of scum on the surface of the water (but my other one doesnt) I try and remove it with paper but it just reappears. What causes this and is there away to stop it?

You might have an excess of dissolved organics. What are your feeding/waterchange regiments like?

I change the water once a week on both, where i use a gravel cleaner... (though not near the plants roots) once every two weeks i clean the Juwel Filter and once every three i clean the Ecco... I change about 30% of the water..

I test the water a couple of times a month and the water quality is fine...

Any ideas?

Increase your surface disturbance and it will get rid of it. It's just a lack of "exchange" at the surface of the water, so organics are gathering there. Once the problem gets started, you can sometimes get type of algaes occuring there also.

Hi Paul

I had a similar problem in a tank and found that if i used an airstone in the tank it broke up the surface of the water enough to stop the scum forming. Another method was to used a Hagen product called a skimmer for my external filter. As for what caused the build up of scum i have no idea but the Discus that were in the tank didn't seem to suffer from it.
