beeng my first time on this forum, I hope you will be pasient with both my newbee questions, and my poor english (when from Norway It`s not everyday u get to practis your English )

Anyway:
I am just about to set up a breeding-group of Hypancistrus Sp. L-066 and startet to wonder if it can crossbreed with other Hypancistrus, or if I can let it live in a tank with another Hypancistrus group (for example L-270)

For start this group must live in my comunity-tank and so share the space with:
tre Pterophyllum scalare (about 3cm)
two Pelvicachromis pulcher (a young pair in a coconut cave, have not yet laid egg, but are about to soon)
a handfull og ancistrus babys
some neontetras
four young Poeciliidae (platy)
a young pleco

do I have to throw out any of these tank-mates ?
(expecialy the pulchers consernes me since they have just start to realy look after their cave)

Hypancistrus have been known to crossbreed. See this article.

Walter has also informed me on several other Hypancistrus cross bred... so it is something to take in consideration when housing 2 differents species...

How about Hypancistrus with other similar families (for example Panaque, or Baryancistrus) ??

any known x-breed between such families..?

Hi!

No crossbreeding known between 2 different genus (in Loricariidae) so keeping Hypancistrus along with Panaque or Peckoltia shouldn't be a problem

ehhm.. unfortunatly the Hypancistrus did`nt know they wer`nt supose to mix, so my L-270 male phushed one of the L-333 female into his cave and held here there for about a week or so. Short story long, now I have 11-12 tiny (cute) babies roaming in the cave well guarded by the male.

I have heard that offspring from different Hypancistrus parents can be infertile when growing up (same way as with horse and donky) Anyone knowing if that might be the case with mine as well ?

So, you weren't taking notice of the messages about NOT keeping Hypancistrus species together...

It's highly likely that the off-spring of this cross-breed are actually fertile, but it's also possible that they are not.

Please do everyone a favour and do not distribute this off-spring, because we don't actually need any more mixed breed fish... The czechs are doing that busines quite nicely, without you adding to it...
