I'd stick with the meaty foods as they are primarily carnivorous.

The high mortality rate I experienced in the past with young L46 was significantly reduced when I started adding pure spirulina powder to whatever food I was serving. Pure spirulina powder is exceptionally fine and will "stick" to anything.
I wouldn't call it meat, but I wouldn't call it vegetables either.

That is my opinion.
I am often wrong.

Hi!

It has been proved now for quite a time that fry and youngs individuals of the genus Hypancistrus are more vegetarian at an early stage... after a while the switch to insect larvae and stuff...

Also Jon Armbruster found vegetal debrits and seed in the stomach of

Thanks for that reassurance, Yann.
Many people end up scratching their heads and walking away when I use the words "algae" or "vegetables" in the same sentence with "Hypancistrus".

Hear, hear!...another method of delivery is to mix agar agar, an algae based gelatin, with pure spirulina and then dip pieces of nylon mesh into the hot mix. Once the gelatin cures, these can be frozen for storage. You end up with a strip impregnated with spirulina. The fry can then browse on the strip like it was a leaf. (BTW, this also helps get Hemiloricaria and Sturisoma past the critical first few weeks.) I keep the strips in zebra fry traps for several weeks, until the little guys get enthusiastic about artemia and the odd bit of flake. After six weeks or so, they are weaned onto New Life Spectrum pellets with weekly doses of chopped bloodworm.
