question about homemade caves

Hi folks 
within the next 4 weeks I'll be upgrading from a 60 gallon to a 180 gallon aquarium, and am planning on using pvc pipe for the pleco caves. Simple yes, but adequete. My question is; can/should I cap one end of the pipe? I.E. can the plecos turn around in the pipe? My thinking on the diameter of the pipe is 2" for lets say up to a 6" pleco. Your thoghts would be appreciated.
