Large pleco and smaller fish

Post by mdv »

I have a pleco(sail-fin type) that's approximately 8" and I would like to move some smaller fish(ottos.cories&platies) into the same tank with the pleco. My question is will the smaller fish be OK with the pleco?
-thanks

I haven't had problems mixing my plecos with small fish. In general the pleco should pretty much leave them alone.

Pl*co-friendly tank-mates

Post by gail »

Well, I am a veteran of less than two weeks' experience ( ) but I have been researching htis question over the past week. Consensus seems to be that a big pl*co will likely spar with an equal-size mate, but will be unlikely to bother smaller fish. Some fish are likely to grow too big too fast (such as the larger-growing pl*cos), but some stay small, such as the corys. There's a wide variety of pretty corys that stay small, and they're active and peaceable, so I'm thinking that's the direction I'll head. I've been advised AGAINST Oscars, pangasius catfish, clown loaches, and guaramis, for various reasons....Good luck!

Plecos will never eat a live fish, no matter how big the pleco or how small the fish.
