Water treatments, need advice

Post by mermaid »

Hi everyoe, I need some advice about my water treatments, I have corys and plecs and I used to keep a large goldfish in with them which I had for 10 years, the temperature was 74, since I have lost my goldfish, i have turned up the heat and its now on 79. The problem is I have been using NUTRAFIN CYCLE, WASTE CONTROL & AQUA SAFE, but have recently read that they are for coldwater and saltwater aquariums, I need to know what i should be using for my tropical tank if I am not suppose to be using the above, can anyone help me, as I am a little confused with all the treatments you can buy and I dont want to get the wrong ones.

Thanks in advance

There was no real need to turn the temperature up, unless you intend adding fish that need warmer temperatures.

I read in "practical fishkeeper that they like it at 79, is that too high?, they seem to be laying eggs all over the place at the minute

74º F would be perfectly OK for them and they will still breed at that. The added advantage is the the heating bill will be less and the fish will in all probability live longer. They will also be a little less active but not that much that you would notice.

Normally I find the most of the debris actually sits on top of sand rather than in it, If I want to give the sand in a particular tank a good glean I just stir it up with a planting stick and then when the debris settles it is syphoned of.

I am not familiar with the electronic gravel gleaners, is there's a way of slowing the flow rate? may be by restricting the out flow it would reduce the power giving the sand a chance to drop back down.

Thank you I will try that, I dont think I can control the flow as it starts as soon as its plugged in.

Another thing, sorry I must seem a bit of a pain, but I have just started with Corys. I have 4 males and one female in my tank, I now recognise the female out of the all, took me a while!!!.

She has laid lots of eggs, I have added the methalyne blue but it seems that the egss that she laid have disintergrated, is this because they were not fertile??

Thanks in advance

That happens sometimes when females get roe'd up, they just lay there eggs when they are ready whether there is a mate or not. It could just be immaturity and the next time you could have more fry than than you could ever imagine.

That would be lovely, it would be a thrill to have them live, have never had any of my fish lay eggs before.

Thank you so much for all your help, I love this forum, so glad i found it
