Would you treat new fish in a quarantine tank?

Post by TGP »

I'm new at the quarantine stuff and need some advice. My friend gave me 3 baby bronze corys (about 3 months old and they are so cute!) and 3 sailfin mollys, 1 being very pregnant. I gave her some baby cherry barbs and baby swordtails in return.

I have had anchor worms in the past (see my post regarding Dyacide) and don't want this to happen again. I moved a couple of swordtail babies from by 4.5 gallon tank into the 55 gallon tank and have the new fish in a 5 gallon quarantine tank. I want to move the corys and 2 of the mollys into the 55 gallon and leave the pregnant one in the quarantine tank to give birth. I still have some babies in the 4.5 gallon tank, so that not available to move the cories into yet.

How long would you quarantine these fish for? Do other people treat their new fish for anything?

Any help would be appreciated.

I quarantine for 3 to 4 weeks. If anything shows up, I would treat it then and in the q-tank. If everyone is healthy, it should be safe to move them to your other tanks. It is up to you to determine the health, and once you know your fish better, you'll know how they should be acting. Since you traded with a friend, have they had any losses? If their fish are still in good health, I would think you are in better shape than getting it from an unknown. Of course you want to make sure they hadn't added anything new to their tanks recently. Even with knowing, quarantine until you feel safe.

Thanks!

I should be able to move the babies into the main tank soon. Then I can move the other fish into there and leave the pregnant molly in where she is.

:)
