These are predatory fish that need plenty of swimming room.

It's often difficult to weam them off live food, so if you are buying a young one, don't spoil it straight away with feeder fish. Unless it is on deaths door, try feeding other foods first.

One technique that can work with Ageneosis spp. is to thread a piece of fish (whole or not) on a loop of fishing line or a whole krill or prawn on a straight piece of line with a knot on the end. Dangle this in front of the outflow from a powerhead or filter. Or, directly tease feed the fish with it.

If the item is not sitting on the bottom the fish may well take it. Once the fish grabs the prey, release one end of the thread a pull it through or with krill, pull the knot through the body of the prawn.

Used to have one that weaned off feeders quite easily.

He soon caught on from his cohabiting s.lima.

Preferred foods were frozen muscles, prawns and even tetra doromin.
