Bristlenose trouble

I have 2 pair of them and they breed very well but I always have several just die after several weeks or even months.I have had them for over a year and tend to give them good care but not sure what I am doing wrong.
Any breeders out there with any tips, I do have them in smaller 10 gal tanks but water change twice a week.
Is there some diet problem or do they tend to beat each other up?
