Realistically how large of aquariums would you need to house a solitary one for life?

aquarium impossible
this is a fish for an indoor pond......
There's one hobbyist (forgot who) who has excellent pix and info about his 8000 gallon pond.
both species reach 4 feet or so; there's no reason to assume its' hybrid offspring will be smaller, there's every reason to assume it's even bigger! hence the creation of these monsters; as foodsupply farmfish....
A 5 foot fish would require a tank of about 6 foot high, 10 foot wide and 20 foot long to have a happy life; sort of.....
hence a pond. Tanks are impossible that size, save when you own a zoo.

after talking to my local aquarium curator he said that for the average adult rtc which reaches approx, 4 feet you would need at bar minimum a 600 gallon tank, which you wouldn't want to spend the money for a custom tank you could do it with a indoor or outdoor pond (depending where yo ulive, Climate) for about 600-1000 dollars.

Those store owners are 'not in tune'. I have a 30" RTC in a 400g (10'x30"x30") and its getting a bit large for that tank. a 3' fish in a 6' tank doesnt work. Mine went from 6" to 30" in 4 years...and I fast it a few days every week.

your tank is not going to be good enough for life, may be it can hold it for about 2 years. In my experience these hybrids grew slower compared to either the RTC or TSN,, this fish definitely has the potential of reaching 4 feet if not bigger, so you will ultimately need a bigger tank. here are some pics of mine, currently around 14" ,, along with other fish:

that particular tank with the RTC and other fish is 360 gal,, it is 6feet long X 4 feet wide and 2 feet tall,, I built the tank myself with acrylic. I will be building a bigger tank soon,, before I built this tank all the fish were in a pond,, but I got tired of looking at them from the top,, so I decided to build this tank. I also have a lot of other tanks.
