I have two of these; a pair.

contaminants of a multipunctatus shipment!

Their broad white bands on the fins and spines, the huge mouth and sheer size (1,5 times the Burundi-petri's for the biggest one, and growing rapidly) are unmistakable differences.....

I think -next to granulosus of course- this is THE most beautiful Synodontis from Tanganyika.

These are great fish. I had two of them and really enjoyed them until they jumped out of my tank late at night and died. I'm not sure how they did this since I have covered the space between my HOB and hood with hard plastic. That was devistating, so I recommend that you be sure to cover any holes in your cover or hood. Still, beautiful cats and great personality.

If they were an accidental shipment, you probably got them ever so slighlty cheaper than a granulosus, which would make them the best looks-for-money Tang cat

Sid - just browsed through the pictures of synodontis petriola, and was wondering if this one doesn't look more like your giant variety, and different fromt the regular petricolas:

I took a lot of the pictures listed in the "regular" petricola species page. I can see why Sid calls them "giant". They are quite big (although not necessarily larger than regular petris), and have slightly different features, like a longer adipose fin, more tubular body shape and a small difference in shape to the humeral process. Compare this fish:

I referred to the latest batch of petricola's as "Burundi petricola", NOT "Giant"!

the fish in the pic in THIS post is pushing 6" and growing.....it has a wide mouth (they're in with the Burundi's, so comparison is easy), orange teeth, a huge upper lip; eyes that are very light (sometimes leaning to yellowish copper, wich we know from S polli), very different from the dark grey eyes of true petricola.

the white bands are much more conspicious too.
my biggest "giant" is easily 1 1/2 times as big as my biggest Burundi-petricola......
I've seen these giants before; 20 cm.......
unfortunately those WERE tagged with a ticket I couldn't afford!

Why don't you try and post pix of both fish for comparison, Alex? That could save us from lots of pointless discussion.
