Hi

I have done somthing today that I have told many people not to do

I bought a fish on impluse without reading about it.

Currently its housed on its own for a couple of weeks but will then go into a 60x24x30 tank with a large plec and a pair of Oscars.

I have tried to find some info on the fish on the net but cannot find any at all so if you can give me any info i will be well happy

Have had a look on the cat-elog and there is no mention of platydoras kawara, although someone may know if this is another name for one of the few platydoras'. Best bet would be to post a picture, or at least give some idea of colouring/size/identifiable characteristics.
Am sure someone more knowledgable will be along to help more, but if not, maybe a pic will get you the answers you want. By the way, the three listed in the cat-elog are , and Platydoras sp.(1)

There's no reference to Pterodoras lentiginosus in the cat-elog, so it would be interesting to know if it's a fish that just isn't seen in the trade or just very rare, or if the name is not recognised - if so, what is it called? I know I didn't post the original question, but I do really like the big dorads and am glad to get involved in a thread once in a while.

Pterodoras lentiginosus is a probable synonym of P. granulosus.

Just did a search and it came up with the following

Pterodoras lentiginosus
lentiginosus (Eigenmann, 1917)

Then again, it was recorded as a synonym of P. granulosus.

So, Oscar52 - looks like you got yourself a !
Looks like you might be needing a bigger tank someday

We don't know if it matches Oscar52's fish, though.

How long before it gets to that size and looks like I am going to have to pass him on because to be fair I cannot house him correctly when he gets bigger.

The biggest I can get is a 84 x 30 x 30 which is not fair on the fish.

Sorry guys (off topic) but WOW! That "Loricaridae - suckermouth catfish: Peckoltia sp. - new catfish species"... that's on the same website. Thats one pretty fish! Is there an L-number for that species?

Pterodoras are funfish, but man, they really bust up your tank...
i've kept 2, from tiny juvies to 1+foot monsters. by that time they really knew what to eat....

They're like rabbits! unlike the niger -wich has a vacuumcleanerlike mouth- they won't "suck up" sand or gravel. They're more like giant Platydoras, with a wide mouth. fortunately they do not eat fish! not even small ones.

they DO eat plants however, wich to my dismay I found out.....
I kept them in my 500 liters 2 meter tank, and -as known here- I'm a bit of a live plants-nut. So there were plenty Crypto's in there, huge Anubias, Giant Vallis etc etc.
I fed mine with spinache, pleco-tabs, live food, flake, bloodworms etc; and peas too. They looooooove peas! A Pterodoras goes wild on peas, berserk!

however, one time I woke up, and noticed (still sleepdrunk) something different.....
it wasn't after the cliche coffeemug that I noticed my cryptocorynes were gone, zip, obliterated

that was about 2 square feet of densely grown C wenti, mind! gone in a single night....

after thaty they decided to have a go at Giant Valli's and it took them just a few weeks to eliminate about 2 dozen Giant valli's, some of wich had 6 foot leaves.

In short:
Pterodoras granulosus = Lawnmowerman in disguise!!
if you like it, get a real big tank, and add a shoal of Methynnis. same diet, good company.
