Bogwood vs. ordinary soaked wood?

While on a hike this past weekend, I found some very nice pieces of ocotillo wood that I thought would look good on my cory tank. Ocotillo is a deciduos desert shrub that resembles a cactus. When the plant dies and all the soft flesh has decayed the bare branches are hollow and honeycombed with holes. Currently, the pieces are soaking in a bucket and I have poured boiling water over them.
But, is it okay to use regular wood in a tank or is it necessary to use bogwood? I understand bogwood is wood that has petrified in a bog. Well, here in NM we don't have many bogs, if you know what I mean.
Many thanks ahead of time!
