I had five white tips about two weeks ago but am now unfortunatley down three.
They are only about three to four inches long but it seems that the bigger cats are dying off, first they get very sluggish and go off there food, which is very unusual for these guys as they are so active normally an devour any food i put in (dried blood words and flake ) then they just stop swimming and lay on the bottom for a few minutes, on the last couple of days they are getting little white patches on them. the first cat to die got a red inflamation around his front right fin
I'm new to cats and really enjoy them, but am at a loss what to do.
Any help would be appretiated

I'm new to catfishes also. I think these fish move from freshwater to saltwater as they mature. I have no idea how much salt they need at what ages, though it seems from the Cat-eLog that they are kept in true saltwater (marine) conditions when they're full grown. If they are in freshwater, maybe that's part of the problem?

I'm looking into getting a 55 gallon in a couple of weeks and making it a brackish tank and was hoping they could hold out till then...

Just wondering how u got on with your sharks? We are having the same problem and wondering if changing to brackish tank worked?

Bad news,
They all ended up dieing before i upgraded??
I got the 50G tank but have gone with pictus they are beautifull.
I really love the white tips theres something about them, but i don't want to try them again untill i can do a full brackish tank.
Right now i throw in a cap full of aquarium salt everytime i do a water change and all the fish seem to benefit from this.

Have you read the info in the Cat-eLog?

We keep our silver sharks at 1 tablespoon of instant ocean per gallon of water and they seem to do fine. Don't know if their long term requirments change with age.

I had 2 till they got to 8" then had to give them away. Ate everything that fit in their mouths. All the profiles says they belong in brackish but mine were initally 2" and were healthy all the way through.
Seen 2 at a lfs 12" in fresh water. Owner says you can raise them in fresh and not necessarily in brackish.
