Ancistrus sp. aff. pirareta from Paraguay?

Post by wijnands »

I bought two of these from Utaka in the Netherlands. They had them labelled as Ancistrus sp. aff. pirareta. All they could tell me with certainty is that they are wild caught and came from Paraguay. One is clearly male already and about 7cm SL. The other is a little shorter and could be female. They were quite shy in the shop in a fairly bare tank but here at home the male has taken up residence at a cave in the middle of the aquarium. I've seen activity in day and night.

Any ideas? It's not claro, I've kept those for 12 years. They do look like Pirateta but not fully so I can see why the shop labled them as they did
