Changes in diet with age for 'Tiger pleco'

My Tiger plec appears to have changed what he prefers to eat. Initially he refused all food offered but excavated a substantial cave in a piece of bogwood (and repeatedly clogged my external filter with excreted wood fibres). However after about 9 months he suddenly switched and now eats a mixed pellet/frozen/veggie diet. He still rasps on wood but this is now a minor component of his diet as evidenced by the free flow of the filter and the fact the wood isn't dissappearing. Has anyone else observed this and is this common with wood-eating fish or other plecos.
