Do Panaque need caves?

I have plenty of caves and tubes in my tank but never seen any Panaque sp. enter the hideout. Do they actually need those? How about breeding them- do they in nature breed in holes or on the piece of wood? I have a few L 191 and L 27 specimens at the moment.

Hi!

THey might only use them when ready to spawn...
Possibly also, try give them, caves made out of wood...
I have some Panaque sp of the Dentex group that are using caves, (slate or PVC) ...
Cheers

Mika,
In nature they do not use caves made of stone. Most spp. seem to spawn in hollows among sunken logs or in actual hollow logs. The males will enlargen the spawning area by gnawing additional wood away. In the aquarium various Panaque spp. have been spawned in slate and tile caves, PVC tubes, and hollows in pieces of driftwood.

Hi,
mine (Panaque nigrolineatus, P.cochliodon, Panaqolus albomaculatus) never sit in caves, only on roots...

Mika, how large of an aquarium are you keeping them in?

Mine, just as Shane pointed out, hang out in the wood hollows of my tank. I've seen them rest in upturned clay flowerpots and stacked slate only a handful of times. But that scoured and holey bogwood they love! The gnarlier the better ... dunno how'd you get really large wood caves for mature sizes to breed in, though.

I have had my panaque now for 10 months.
During the day when the lights are on he sits under a piece of bogwood, usually in sight but away from the light.
The tank has 5 pieces of bogwood with plants, but he always retires to the same piece of wood away from the light.
In fact both the panaque and the larger gibbeceps are attracted to the same piece and seem quiet happy to be close together.
