Hatching and raising Hoplo fry

Post by Narwhal72 »

Finally got a good spawn from my spotted Hoplo cats (Megalechis thoracata) and I need some info on hatching and raising the fry.

1. How long from spawn until eggs hatch?
2. When should I start feeding?
3. What are good first foods? I have microworms, live bbs, and powder fry food available. Are they large enough fry to start straight on bbs?

If anyone can offer any advice I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Andy

Very cool.
How many hoplos in your group?
How did you get them to spawn?
Size of spawners?
Ph/GH/KH/Temp?
Did you say “CATFISH!?” I’m in.

Just a pair.
Moved them from one tank to another with a cool water change. Used a yogurt container lid as a cover and the male built the bubblenest underneath. Female laid a ton of eggs in the nest but also had eggs all over the tank as well. Even some on the male's fins.

They are both about 4" SL. Male is slimmer and a little shorter.

I don't monitor pH or hardness but they are in straight RO water so it's pretty soft. Temp in the fish room is about 78 degrees and they went into a tank right after a big water change so it was probably in the mid 60's when they went in.
