I have allways heard this, but have found it to be untrue in my case.
I have a tank with 8 adult L. pictus ( females up to 28 in.) also in the same tank I have S. pleurops
S. eupterus,Chysichithys Sp.,H. brachysoma, Anciatrus, and small tetras. I even have a spawning
colony of S. barbatum in this tank.
In another tank I have a mix of adult L, pictus and L.marmoratus plus smaller fish .The books will
tell you these fish will not get along together.
I have never seen any form of aggression from these fish even to the point that the Learius
tend to stack on top of each other and the smaller fish hide under them.

I often think a lot of this information is printed in books by people that have never really worked
with the fish they are writing about, or misinterpret the actions of the fish. Once it is written it is
passed from book to book becoming the written law. To me this very sad, Not only because of the
Misinformation but the fact that so many people beleave every thing they read and donot get
the chance to really enjoy the full potential of the fish they own.

Hi katman
thanks for your info im fairly new to keeping cats have kept marines and koi for a few years now and just fancied a go at keeping some of the larger cats but want to find out as much info as possible to try and avoid any pitfalls .As i said i have just the learius pictus in the tank at the moment as the tank is only a week or so old dont want to over load the filters to quickly. But would like to add a lima shovel nose and a giraffe cat at a late date was thinking of a tiger shovel nose but thought that it would get to big for my set up and as i dont have the space to upgrade tank thought that lima would be a better choice.Unless some one could tell me of another pim that may be suitable .
cheers !!! all :D

Your aquarium is nowhere near large enough for a Giraffe Cat (assuming you mean Auchenoglanis).

Try looking out for some of the medium Doradids (although they are harder to find than either the smaller species or the ones that grow too large for the home aquarium.
Whereabouts in the UK are you? We might be able to suggest some good outlets for your area.
