Thought I'd share the new project that I have been working on. The new fish room will be 31' x 22'.... more than double the size of my current one. I will add pictures as I get more done.

In this garage I made 1 big mistake, there is nowhere to sit, thus there is no place to enjoy the fishes. It is a workroom, and that resulted in ultimately a lot of dry tanks.

Most likely you wil have a lot of small tanks for breeding, for raising fry - but I would also plan a place to sit, and have a few nice tanks around it. And among the tnaks you might also want to be able to sit down, and observe. Sometimes observing is needed and doing it sitting is more comfortable.

I made also a smaller mistake, I forgot ventilation. This, however, could later be mended.

Than you for the input.... I will have somewhere to sit as well and a air exchanger plus a dehumidifier will be used as well to keep the humidity down to a good level. This is my 3rd fish room..... I am a slow learner but hopefully I thought of everything this time as it will be my last build (I hope anyways)! Smallest tank I use is 20 gallon (I have them up to a 125 gallon in use now), when I get done I will have a large tank for some stingray as well.... 8' x 4' I am planning for them. I will likely post a thread on that build as well.

Cool and exciting.

Is this going to be an in-floor heater? If so, how have you insulated the floor from heat losses to ground, which is probably at year round 55 F a few feet below grade in Michigan?

It appears he has already insulated above the concrete before running the heating lines in that pic.

And yes that is a fish house! 50% bigger than my 2 car garage!

Yes, it is in floor heating. There will be a slight loss in heat.... but not enough for me to worry about. Heat will always go up.....

Very nice, I'd love to have that much space for a fish room, I'm already imagining what I'd put in it!

Top of the list would be a very long river/rapids tank along one wall!

Gotcha. So it is insulated.

I am not sure how to interpret the last bit. We are talking conductive, contact heat transfer, to which gravity is immaterial, as opposed to a convective mode of heat transfer involving air or other gases, which you appear to be hinting at. I am guessing you mean that the heat will be transferred from the warm floor in the up direction by convection quickly enough making the slow conductive transfer through the insulation to the ground negligible.

We used to have an icehockey stadion in Nijmegen, which became redundant. So it was removed, to make place for houses.

Problem was, the soil was frozen for the first 5 meters after 50 years of ice hockey there. When it was build, just after WWII nobody had ever thought of insulation. They had to wait 3 years before building could start.

Convection heat and thus the lack thereoff, can go far. Luckely the floor is insulated, that will help a lot.

Before I got hurt and couldn't work anymore I did plumbing and heating for many years..... I have don't a lot of in floor heating. More than I care to remember! lol I started doing this in Alaska... ground temp is a bit colder than it is here in Michigan. If I find it doesn't put out enough heat (I am sure it will be fine) I can always put in a wall, unit, or a space heater. I will likely do this anyways... just for a backup.

So far, I have 30-40 breeders (~151 liter), 6-75 gallon (~285 liter), 1-90 gallon (~340 liter), and 4-~50 gallon (~189 liter) tanks set up. I still have more I need to move after I make some stands.

Just out of curiosity, what does the water bill look like? Off the top of my head I am calculating just under 4,000 gallons a month for water changes.

I am on a well so no "water bill". But my electric bill is way up there. Right now, I have both fish rooms running as far as air pumps and dehumidifiers ect. I was changing ~ 150gallons of water a day.... taking off a day every so often so you are right there with the estimate. The new fish room I tend to change even more water, but I have not calculated it yet.... figured I wait till I am done before I did. Electric bill last month $572........

I should add that my water usage is actually higher than what I said it was...... I use a RO filter and mix RO and tap to get what I want. So ~75 gallons of RO water and same for tap water a day. Not sure how many gallons of water I use to make a gallon of RO.
