I bought a fish labelled L318 New Zebra. I seem to be unable to find any information about this fish, and wondered if it's correctly identified.

I think your species are L-316 Hypancistrus sp and a really beauty one, the pattern can different a lot in these species.

Hi Janne,
I was looking at L- 316, but the tail looks completely different. Can that be a matter of age? The one I have is 7 cm including the tail, but that in itself wouldn't be an indication of age, as it would depend on how large this specie can grow I suppose.
BTW, the color of the fish is not as black as the pictures might suggest, it's more a very dark grey.
Thanks for assisting me in finding the identity of this fish

7 cm TL...I still think these is L-316 and a very young one maybe 1 year old or so, you did'nt buy more of them?
I have a few of these and they show much different in the pattern and the black is more very dark grey so it fits your fish.

I can only agree with Janne. If you could get a hand on the aqualog extra "The latest L-Numbers" you could find on pp. 20-21 quite a lot of varieties of this species.
