I've kept these for years and have tried various methods for spawning them, to no avail - indoor, outdoor, blackwater, clearwater, rainwater, ponds, stream set-ups, etc. I saw one spawning report, but it's not all that detailed and doesn't specify whether eggs ever hatched.

Has anyone else successfully spawned them? Any information would be helpful. They're not frequently available for purchase and are one of the fish I'd like to never run out of. They are just fantastic to watch and absolutely fascinating in large groups.

Below is a short tour of *most* of my display tanks (I did not spruce them up at all for this, sorry), with occasional piles of kids' toys and plenty of dog hair for good measure.


I also have a fishroom with tanks ranging from 5-40 gallons. All told, I think I've got 28 tanks. 9 throughout the main house, and 19 in the fish room, as follows:
9x10 gallon
3x20 long
2x20 tall/regular
1x40 long
2x40 breeder
1x30 breeder
1x15 gallon
1x5 gallon

I shuffle what's in tanks from time to time to work with different species. Currently the hyalobagrus colonies are in a densely planted 33 long and a densely planted 125, as I'm working with some other fish in the breeding tanks right now. When I've set them up to breed I'll pull out a female or two with visible green belly and feed well, then throw in some males a few days later. So far, nada. It may be they're eating eggs before I ever see them, but I was fairly surprised that after 2 summers in various pond set-ups, with lots of live food and vegetation, I still have nothing to show for it.

Wow, seen some well planted and thriving planted tanks in my time but not so many under one roof. Very impressive.

As for breeding hyalobagrus, been trying for a while now myself but to no avail. Did find interestingly that they seemed to enjoy swimming in the flow of a freshly cleaned filter/powerhead as a group, which was really unexpected from these cats, in what was essentially a stiller water setup. Would of course be interested if you did have success.

So... I have a tank with a bunch of fry and it'll be some time before I can really tell what they are. The fry likely came from moss. The moss came from 2 different community tanks, both of which have very happy populations of these guys. Whatever the fry are, if they're from either of those tanks they are definitely not something I've bred and raised before. If they're not from either of those tanks, I really just don't know what to think anymore. It always messes with my brain a bit when fish appear in tanks I had 0 fish in.

I think it's a happy and exciting time when things like this occur

Somehow or another, it turns out that these fry are Madagascar rainbows. LOL! A nice find, but I really don't remember putting anything from my husband's tank in this tank.
