What kind of upside down catfish are typically sold at chain pet stores? I do not have picture capabilities yet, sorry. However, I have two upside down catfish that don't look like any pictures I can find. They were about 1 inch long when I got them about 4 months ago. They were labeled as 'upside down catfish' They are now about 3 1/2 to 4 inches long. They are very shy and hide under and behind a stump decoration. The bigger one has started pushing the smaller one out. They get along well with my kuhli loaches, clown loaches, and corys.

They are velvety black on the body with a lot of tiny black dots on fins. I have been told these wouldn't but a couple of inches long, they are still growing. I thought they might be either synodontis eupterus or nigriventis, but there is no white on the body. I was kind of wondering how big they will get.

I am really fairly new at catfish keeping, but am learning fast. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Synodontis eupterus.

They grow to more than a "few inches". More like 8" with tail, 6" without. Nice fish. but they grow quickly and will soon need at least a 55 gal to be looked after properly.

definitely depends on the book!

There are a LOT of "general tropical fish"-books out there, where the "catfish" section is basically a compilation of mistakes, so to speak.....

wich book are we talking about?

You can safely assume the the catfish-knowhow (especially naming them!) on this site and forum is THE current version that's scientifically accepted.

Jools, Siluris, Rusty, Dinyar and the rest are pretty much on top of things, usually.
Plan B should not automatically be twice as much explosives as Plan A
