Best cave for L114

Hello everyone!

I’m about to build my own plecostomus cave for my 5 L114!

One of them is about 20cm long and the other ones are like 10cm long.

I would like caves that they could use now and in the future to hide and spawn/breed...
What do you guys recommend?

I read so many posts about it that I’m now very confused....

If I missed a post where it’s already written, feel free to tell me where to look and delete my post :)

I’m French but you can write with cm or inch, I’ll translate it myself!

Thank you all!!

I write this while stating that none of my plecos have bred. Your question is dead on. If someone on this list has bred L114, then his answer will be 100%. For me it is a constant search for what size, position, composition, and orientation of the caves should be. Perhaps some romantic music might help as well. Best of luck!!!!

Hi py.lemoine,

There is a YouTube channel called "PseudaSmart" (here's a link to the channel: Click here). It features the spawnings of a variety of Pseudas, including leopardus and cf. leopardus. I've watched a few of the videos and they show you the style and size of cave that is useful. The videos I've seen don't have narration but you can get a good sense of the type of cave you want by estimating how the fish fit in their caves in the videos.

Here's an example: L600_L114_spawn_attempt

Good luck, and welcome to PlanetCatfish! Please share pictures and stories of your fish with us some day.

Cheers, Eric

Barry I get what you mean! By watching the videos, I can see some monster caves and some like “regular big caves” for big plecos... this is why I’m still confused! Ahah!
Thank you two for your answers!

I’ll post pictures of my fish ASAP!! In a new post! Maybe you’ll be able to sex them!

Of course, you can also post a question in the comments section of the videos. Ask what size caves he uses. Maybe @PseudaSmart will respond.

Cheers, Eric

Or you can meet Jim at the next Catfish Convention in October (Jim's come in the past) outside of Washington DC:

Hopefully there are cheap flights from EU; if not, I think Hans Evers is coming (maybe you can sneak in to one of his large luggage bags).

Bonjour, je suis désolé pour le retard. La grotte idéale est celle qu'ils choisissent. Il est préférable de placer 4-5 grottes dans l'aquarium. les grottes devraient être un peu différent.

Cave guidelines for Pseudacanthicus

Back of cave has to be flat. No angles, pinched ends, taco shells, or tapered ends.
Made of clay, brown colors, unglazed ceramic.
Surface finish should have slight texture, no high gloss or rough sandpaper texture.
Opening should be round / oval .
Cave width. The male to be able to open pectoral fins 70-80% and touch both sides of the cave.
Cave height. A lot of variation. Some pseudas like to be able to have their dorsal fin fully erect and others like to keep theirs down.
Cave depth. Again a lot of variation. Cave should be TL of male plus 1-2” additional.

Bon chance,
Jim

Ahahahha I’m so sorry to be late answering but I never thought I would have more answers!

Flights are quite expensive from Paris!
There was an event in south of France in September 2017 but I didn’t get the chance to get there!

Thank you Eric! I’ll try to ask questions if I need more informations!
I already have small caves but too small for them! Well too small for the future!
And the big ones are open on both sides! So I knew they were not the best ones but at least they can hide there!

I’m gunna look at the link you sent me maybe there will be a conference in Paris soon! Thank you Linus!

Him thank you for all your informations! I think I’m gunna do different sizes caves and I guess the male will choose the best one for him!
And how come you spoke French? Google translator? Ahah!

I’ll post pictures of my plecos once I’ll figure out the way to post them! I’m not familiar with forums!

Thank you all again!!
