Please ID my catfish!
Please ID my catfish!
Hi
I'm confused with identifying my two corys. There were only two of them when I purchased. I'm desperate to get more as I know they'd be even happier.
I thought they might be Fairy Corys but looking at some photos, I'm not 100% convinced.
I've endlessly searched the net to identify. I also keep going to the aquatics centre (over six months) to get more but they keep telling me they're still waiting.
Please help as I want more.
Many thanks!

Hi Justine,
Welcome to PlanetCatfish. You've got two nice corys there.
They are not fairy corys () because your fishes' tails have spots but fairy corys have clear ("hyaline") tails.
Check out . I think it's a pretty close match.
As for getting more, that's a whole other issue. Many fish stores get fish labeled with the wrong name. So if you discover the right name, you probably can't go back to that store and ask for more using the correct name because the correct name doesn't match their wholesale list (which is still printed with the incorrect name). So one thing you can do is just ask your local store to order more of the same. Alternatively, you may be able to locate some hobbyists near you that have/breed kanei and they can sell to you.
Cheers, Eric

C048 are often sold as kanei, and are more common in the hobby. I used to have a group of 9 bit sold them recently.

Thanks Eric!
C048s are really beautiful Cories, but I don't think they've been bred in captivity.
Here's a photo of some of mine before I sold them.
Cheers,
Paul

Re: Please ID my catfish!
They are knock-outs Paul! (as are Justine's).
Cheers, Eric
I just checked the CorydorasWorld website and with some other people. They indicate that both C048 and kanei have been bred in captivity, but apparently with difficulty. Neither is an easy species to breed (unlike venezuelanus, LOL).Mol_PMB wrote: 22 Aug 2017, 19:37C048s are really beautiful Cories, but I don't think they've been bred in captivity.

Re: Please ID my catfish!
Thank you so much for your help!
It is their tails that threw me.
My local aquatics centre is poor. I've asked for their help and they're awful. They were sold to me as Fairy Cory. Now I know otherwise, I can begin my search again with accuracy!
I'm not struggling with my other Corys. I've got 11 fry all really healthy and waiting to be big enough to go in the big tank.
I apologise if I don't get the right terms or numbers for species as I'm a complete newbie and constantly learning!
My partner has a gold spot (I think) and it has patches which really worry me. Is this the thread to post for advice or somewhere else?
Many thanks again.

Re: Please ID my catfish!
Hi Justine.
This is normally the identification section. If it's for a 'pleco', then post something in the Loricariidae section.
Thanks
Martin
