My L27a has been changing colours but not the pattern yet. Mine is similar to the first pic except it is more brownish. Does the food affact this change in colours and patterns?

Looks more like the change in the color pattern is a result of growth. Color patterns in fishes don't generally change except as a result of growth. Color intensities may change due to environmental factors but seldom color patterns (flatfishes are an obvious exception).

Wow, at first it was a "watermelon" and now its changing . Never seen that before. Sorry I don't have any info to offer, but its pretty cool (unless you preferred the watermelon) :?

Very fancy patterns!!

We purchased a royal panaque on saturday, a very small one, he must be just about 4cm long.

Ours has the stripey pattern on him, i have never seen a spotty one before this? unless of course thats how they are when very, very young then the strips are merged from the spots.

L-204 also goes thru some radical changes in the patter when growing, could be the same with this one.

Hi zabra pleco

That is not the case. The dotty royals are a different kind of royal alltogether. It is L-27a. My friend has one that is 8" and it is still dotty all over the body. ALso, these photos show other adult royals that are dotty:

that dotty panaque is very, very pretty although i do like our stripy one also, he is very small at the mo, and not in very good condition ( he was at a bad fish dealer, and they were all very poorly)

Once we has had the time to get better - how fast are these likely to grow, and yes we do know they grow big, dont panic.

I just bought one on Sunday. He is about 4 inches long. Right now I have him in a quarintine tank. Unfortunately, I see a few tiny white spots on him (ick I assume) so I have increased the temp and added melafix. Hopefully that will help.
